Enhanced Music Experience for the Mobile Phone

The first mobile phone, first generation or 1G, released in 1983 by the Motorola Company dawned the age of the mobile phone. Although its original purpose was to make phone calls and phones portable; mobile phones have evolutionized to become a multifaceted electronic device since its birth in 1983. From navigating us to our next destination, to checking our emails, and even recording a homemade video, a mobile phone can now perform a vast array of tasks. Recently, mobile phones are being used as mini - portable speakers, giving consumers music where ever they are, as long as they have the mobile phone.

To aid and enhance the music experience, Logitech has released the Pure-Fi Mobile speaker system which connects to a mobile phone in two ways. The first is through Bluetooth; however, this can only be done with phones that support Advanced Audio Distribution Profile technology (A2DP). Phones that do not support A2DP can still use the Pure - Fi Mobile through an auxiliary or USB cable connection. However, the wireless Bluetooth connection allows phones to be as far as 33 feet from the speakers. The speakers are charged by a rechargeable battery. They will get an estimate of 12 hours per full charge.

The speakers will cost around $150 when Logitech releases the product.

Will the Verizon iPhone Cripple Verizon?

If the consumer dream comes true and the iPhone comes to Verizon, it could lead to a crippling of the Verizon network the way the iPhone hurt AT&Ts network. According to Verizon, their network is built for reliability and AT&T claims that customers may be disappointed switching to Verizon for the iPhone. Since Verizon has been able to look at AT&Ts problems with the iPhone when it was released, it is expected that Verizon will be able to avoid the pitfalls and learn from the mistakes.
AT&T may lose many customers in the future. Some immediately, others after spectating and discovering whether Verizon can handle the iPhone better than AT&T. Those locked into contracts with AT&T will have to wait to decide whether to switch or not. More importantly, according to analyst Charles Golvin, customers will be lost from Sprint and T-Mobile. Many customers did not want to switch to AT&T but will make the transition to Verizon for the iPhone.
The hype around the Verizon iPhone is so rumored and spoken about that it is now in Verizon's best interest to live up to the consumer demand and be sure they get the iPhone. The deal would benefit Apple and Verizon, and also increase competition between AT&T and Verizon. Offering the iPhone from more than one provider would give Apple more sales and possibly lower prices for consumers if Verizon and AT&T lower the price of the phone and plans to beat each other. It seems almost inevitable that Verizon will eventually get the iPhone, and as I have blogged about in the past, it is only a question of when and how big of a splash it will make.

Convenience and Multi-taking Trends

Throughout the consumer electronics industry, one of the most important trends that have been shaping the industry is the consumer demand for products that are very convenient, and can perform multiple tasks. Years ago, companies were making separate products for internet access and cellular phones. Although this serves as a smart business tactic for the company, consumers do not want to have to buy two different products, and have to carry both around. With the ever-growing trend of smartphones, many companies are attempting to combine a cell phone with anything from internet access, to GPS devises, to convenient email use. This idea clearly favors the consumer because they only need to buy one product for multiple purposes. However, the business receives positive consumer feedback, and begins to develop brand equity and loyalty.
This new trend has then largely affected the competitive landscape in the United States. Companies that simply specialized in one product that performs one specific job can no longer stay competitive. Sales for products such as a GPS have declined because of smart-phones like the iPhone or BlackBerry have “apps” that contain a GPS system. In today’s society, many consumers continue to demand products that are convenient; therefore, companies need to broaden their production to stay competitive.

HP releases new tablet - to rival the iPad

The Hp slate 500 is the first tablet to be release by the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. The new HP tablet runs on a Microsoft Windows operating system, Windows 7, the same version used by many standard PC's. HP rival tablets have brought more of a smartphone feel to its devices unlike the "Slate 500." By using the same operating system, HP can almost duplicate the PC feel. This unique plan may be what gives HP the boost in sales.

In comparison to its rival, the iPad, the HP slate 500 has a larger base price tag. However, with this price tag comes a standard of 64 gigabytes of storage, the most expensive option on the iPad. Other speculations such as the weight and the multi-touch enabled screen are the same. The HP Slate 500 comes with Wi - Fi Access but not with a built-in capability to connect with high-speed cellular networks, like its rivals. Nevertheless, this may just be HP's attempt to further the Slate 500 from a smartphone-oriented tablet.

Out with the Old, in with the New

sky-tv-remote.jpg

As technology and technological devices have changed drastically over recent years, some devices have been “left behind”. Of these devices is the commonly utilized remote control. With advances in televisions, DVD players, recording devices, and cable offerings, remote controls have not undergone equivalent advancements. Rather than being modified to accommodate new technologies, further buttons have been added to remotes. This proves to be a problem as we are now in a time of efficiency, where quick, user-friendly devices are desired over time consuming, packed devices.

The article compares the process of selecting a television show via a Comcast cable remote and then using Netflix on an iPad. The remote involved a five-step process, while the iPad, only three. This speaks to the problem at hand, a popular device lacking speed and ease of operation. To resolve this problem companies are resorting to alternative products and systems of operating. Cable company executives have said that, “…they are adapting their systems to run more of their software remotely in data centers, rather than from the cable box…” so, “that they can more easily update their services, without requiring users to get a new box” (Let Behind: the Clunky TV Remote). With this approach remotes will not only receive the facelift they need, but they will also become more competitive and have a chance of standing up to popular devices now being used for the same purposes. As the process comparison notes, there are new devices that offer the capability of watching television shows and movies. However, it is hoped that with a new remote cable and televisions will be able to extend their product life cycle.

Apple slips in Greenpeace green electronics ranking

Apple has fallen in rank on the Greenpeace ranking of green electronics. Conversely, HP and Samsung have made significant climbs from 8th to 4th and 13th to 5th place respectively. The main reason for HP's jump has been its elimination of PVC and BFR, toxic chemicals, in its products. Samsung has risen due to the removal of penalty points after it missed deadlines to remove PVC from products.

Nokia remains at the number one spot, a place it has held since 2008 due to its limited use of toxic chemicals and its energy efficiency. Microsoft was a surprising 17 out of 18 due to the change of mind after committing to remove PVC and BFR's from products and then not doing so.

The significance of this list is that Greenpeace, a well-respected environmental advocate, is informing the public on which companies are eco-friendly and which are not. In an age of going green, consumer electronics are held responsible to be cutting edge and lead the way toward energy efficiency and environmental protection. When there is little price difference, consumers will drift toward the products from companies with Corporate Social Responsibility for the environment. In fact, some even pay more for green products. The good PR that results from ranking high on Greenpeace's list will undoubtedly result in increased product sales because people will feel good when they are buying those environmentally friendly products.

Eventually, I think that all companies will have to have a large amount of CSR to be competitive. As transparency in companies increases with technology and public awareness, consumers will be more apt to buy TV's and laptops and cellphones from companies who show an interest in the well-being of the environment.

Television With Internet

Recently, the television industry has introduced a new way of watching, in 3D. With that recent innovative step, people may have thought that any improvement in Tv's may take a while. However, just last week companies such as Samsung and Sony have released televisions with the ability to browse the internet, just like how your computer or your phone does.

To watch use the internet on the television, one must have internet connection at their home. Once internet connection is established at the home, the user can connect the television to the home internet. First time user's will be asked to accept the general disclaimer before they may start browsing.

Additional, helpful "widgets" have been added, with more to come, for easy access to particular websites. So far the widgets include, Yahoo, Youtube, Twitter, Ebay, Amazon, Fantasy Sports League, and Blockbuster. Software updates may occur occasionally; this can be done automatically, via the internet. Or manually, through the internet or a USB cord.

Sony, has been trying to combine both a 3D element with internet capability to their televisions. It seems that the next step in television is the combination of the two. Consumer's will get too see, first hand if that really is television's next step.

Verizon to start selling iPad in October

The predictions and rumors of Apple and Verizon are starting to take shape. Verizon Wireless will start selling the iPad on October 28th. There will be three bundles available, all with Wifi and a Verizon mobile hotspot device.

Having broken the exclusivity with AT&T, it is probable that the overwhelming sales likely to ensue will start a snowball effect forcing Apple to release the iPhone to Verizon. The predominantly Verizon wireless consumer market is itching to get their hands on the iPhone without having to switch to AT&T. The iPad is the first step in what could be many maneuvers by Apple to broaden the market and remove the restrictions of AT&T.

If the Ipad sells, which being the fastest selling electronic of all time means that it most likely will, I am fairly certain that the 2011 predictions of the Verizon iPhone will come to life. This can be seen as a test for both companies. If the tablet sells, then there are good chances that the iPhone will as well. This is an exciting bridge in the consumer electronics industry and it may lead to unforeseen things in the future.

New "Outlook" for Mac

Coming on October 26th, Mac users are being presented with a new “Outlook” on their operating system. Microsoft Office is coming out with a faster, better version except this time it is not for Microsoft; it is for the Mac computers rival, Apple. For the first time, Mac users will be able to use Windows Outlook, a popular email, calendar and contacts program that had previously only been found in Microsoft based computers.
This is a big deal because companies in which Outlook is the standard system of email and contacts will be looking to switch to the Mac system. Before this new system, many companies had to use special machines and software to convert the information to run on Windows. But now they can use this new version to directly import data from Windows Outlook.
This is yet another example of Apple excelling in their field, and continuing to separate themselves in the consumer electronics industry. Time and time again, Apple has been innovating new ideas that directly benefit the consumers, and it has clearly worked. Apple prides itself with understanding their customer’s wants, and this new system of Windows for Mac computers is just the next of many examples.

Second Generation Sync system

“Sync” technology enables consumers to have the availability of consumer electronic products (such as iPods, MP3 players, and cell phones) at their fingertips through their car dashboard system. In 2007, Ford invested a lot of resources and money into the development of this product, and it has surely proven its worth. Now, Ford has come out with a second generation of the Sync system that “aims to redesign the entire user interface of the dashboard with color-coded touch screens, better voice recognition and five-way control pads on the steering wheel.” Some of the new options with the new system include personalized “instrument-cluster gauges,” twin 4-inch screens on both sides of the speedometer, and even allows the user to set up a WI-FI network in their car. Lastly, most, but not all of these functions are controlled by voice commands.
I believe that this device will be a huge success. People are always looking for more convenient ways to use their phones and music, and this product does just that. The most important of the new advances in the sync, I believe, is the WI-FI network. Many consumers want to be able to use their laptops when they are on long trips, or even if they are commuting with someone to work every day. The importance of the internet continues to grow every day, and this product helps buyers to connect to this trend more simply.

A Closer Look at the Industry

Influential leaders in the Consumer Electronics Industry are for the most part company founders and CEOs. These leaders have progressed electronically devices and concepts throughout the years. Some of the most well known leaders include those leaders who work for the biggest names in the industry, especially over the past 20 years when technology has advanced exponentially. Steven Jobs; co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc., Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corporation of America; as well as Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis co-CEOs of Research In Motion (RIM),serve as an example of these types of leaders.

Based on the nature of the Industry, most companies tend to structure themselves as corporations. The limited liability, investment opportunities, and ease of transferring ownership make the companies perfect candidates for corporations. With the extent of research and money needed to create electronics, the business model for a corporation is ideal. Various sub-divisions are responsible for the differing company actions and capital is raised through forms of capital as well as shareholders. With amount of competition among products, companies are investing in research and manufacturing, so that products can reach the markets as soon as possible.

Companies of the Industry offer a range of job opportunities. At the corporate level, jobs are offered for student interns, recent graduates, as well as experienced professionals. Positions are available in administration, customer support, manufacturing, sales, development, operations, information technology, marketing, finance and accounting, management, as well as additional fields. Due to the fact that consumer electronic devices are used across the globe, jobs are available throughout the world dependant on one’s position.

Cisco to Use Videoconferencing to Step Up Appeal to Consumers

Today Cisco is unveiling a new videoconferencing system to compete with Skype and other videochat programs. It is meant to appeal to consumers in that the conferencing will be available over TV screens which are in general much larger and more conveniently placed than computers. Cisco's stock has risen just from the announcement of the release of this new system in hopes that it will live up to the expectations that consumers will find it useful.

The system will be expensive, possibly around $600 according to the article but details will be specified later today at the news conference. This compares to the generally free version of Skype used by over 560 million people. Most of us have seen the Cisco videoconferencing commercials, but those are more business and education oriented such as all the Cisco projectors at our university. This new system will be utilized right at home in the living room where chats to friends, relatives, and business associates can be done.

I forsee Cisco struggling to win over the consumers who have already dedicated themselves to free chat programs such as Skype and Oovoo. The idea of spending for videoconferencing, even for better quality and convenience, has not yet been introduced until this. It will be up to consumers to decide whether the investment is worth its price, as the return on investment may be small depending on the number of calls you make. However, the success of Cisco in the business world could just as easily spill over into the consumer market and lead to a large revenue stream from satisfied customers. It will be interesting to see how Cisco can stack up against the already popular versions of videoconferencing.

TV on the Go

WCMH-TV, the NBC affiliate of Media General,Inc., has recently launched the company's first mobile TV (MDTV). This broadcast is available on electronic items such as laptops and cell phones, as long as they are properly equipped. This means that the portable device will need to have a chipset built into it. If the chipset is not already built in, consumers will be able to buy tuners or USB-type external devices to plug into the device. Other than having to buy the tuner, this service is completely free.

Contents that are available through this broadcasting include news (both national and local), sports, entertainment, and on-demand videos. These shows were chosen to meet the needs of the consumers.

Media General first began with reaching out to their consumers through providing internet services, emailing services, and texting. However, with a change in consumer needs, they have decided to fulfill these needs through this new service.

Certain countries in Asia, such as South Korea, are already providing mobile TV to consumers. It has proven to be a great hit in these countries and I'm interested to see if it will be as widespread in the United States as it is in those countries. Seeing that it will be free, I feel that many people will decide that it will be a worthwhile investment, even if they have to spend a little extra to buy the external tuners.

The Rise of New Powers

A rising leader in the Consumer Electronics Industry is John Herrington. This past August Herrington was named the president of Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America (SEMCA). He stated that he looked, “forward to joining the Sharp team to help further the growth of Sharp’s brand and market share in the U.S.” as, “around the world the Sharp brand stands for quality, value and innovation…”. Herrington joins Sharp after spending nearly eight years with LG Electronics, leaving as president of U.S. sales of the company.

In recent LG Electronics news, the company has announced their release of their new powerful next-generation mobile device for later this year. The Optimus smartphone exemplifies how the, “next-generation smartphones and tablets will run multiple operating systems and powerful cloud applications like high-definition gaming thanks to the growing use of virtualization on mobile devices”, and is, “one example of more powerful mobile gadgets that could take advantage of virtualization”.

The development of virtualization would allow mobile devices to gain more processing power enabling, “users to load and run multiple operating systems and take advantage of powerful cloud computing applications on their mobile devices”. The faster processors would allow applications to run faster as well as consolidated without wasting resources. According to Steve Sunbur, CEO and founder of Open Kernel Labs, “virtualization could also result in cheaper smartphones with longer battery life”.

The current problem with such devices is that, “many applications are written in code that may not be compatible with a mobile device's operating system”. It is this reason that, “a virtualized environment needs to be established”. But looking forward, “observers said that virtualization technology could change the way handheld devices are used in three to five years”. As Les Forth, field applications engineer at Freescale Semiconductor said, “…we ultimately will be handling handheld computers with the [capability] of today's PCs”.

Virtualization is just one example of the innovativeness of consumer electronic products. New concepts for technology are constantly being introduced to the market, offering various job opportunities from researchers to manufacturers to corporate bigwigs. As a consumer, I appreciate the range of products available as well as the opportunities these products allow for. The development of virtualization makes me think of the endless possibilities of consumer electronics and how technological things will become in the future.

3D Movie Projectors on the Rise

3D has without a doubt become the new trend. 3D movies, 3D computers, 3D TV. It was only a matter of time before there were 3D projectors too. Sony, JVC and Acer have taken charge in the production of the home projectors to offer cinema-like viewing in ones own home. The projectors, topping out at around $10,000, are still too expensive to own for some people. However, as time goes on the price will drop. There are already cheaper options such as one by Acer for only $699.
If people are granted the same opportunities at home that a movie theater offers, the need to go out to the theater declines. The packages available by Sony, JVC, and Acer include 3D glasses and a built in 3D transmitter.
I foresee 3D becoming even more popular on the horizon. Projectors may take home cinema to the next level with surround sound and 3D completing the audio and video combination needed for optimum audience captivation. High definition and 3 dimensions of video will possibly become a staple in the future and a new standard. 2D video may become outdated and obsolete if the demand for 3D continues to rise.

Now, An Easy Swipe and...Your Paid.

Why cant everyone accept credit cards? Jack Dorsey, who also founded Twitter, tackles the question by introducing the World, to the Square. Jack Dorsey who is also the CEO of Square Inc. introduces a new electronic payment service that allows users to accept credit cards through their mobile phones.

This ground-breaking service will allow for everyone not just companies to use credit cards.
Surprisingly, in comparison to the ordinary expenses that come with being a card merchant, the Square is actually a cheaper offer. To become a credit card merchant, one must buy, a couple hundred dollar card-reading device as well as comply with a $15-$25 charge. These merchants must also obtain a minimum of $25 in transaction fees. The Square only asks for a 2.75% of the transactions made, plus 15 cents. This fee, is still less then what actual merchants pay, which range from 3 - 4% percent of the transaction (pending on the credit card) plus thirty cents.

The Square Software comes with a "Square plug" (equivalent to the several hundred dollar card reading device) free of charge! The reader attaches to the headphone jack of the iphone, jpad, itouch, or android (available for laptops soon) and has a slot on the top, so users may swipe their card. For now, the software allows users to receive up to $1000 of their transactions in their bank accounts. Transactions made after the $1000 limit will be reviewed to prevent fraud and theft. However, if a user discloses more information about their "business" he or she can immediately raise their max amount.

The SquareUp software, is a groundbreaking innovation that i hope to see more development of. It has the potential to help many hurting small businesses, as well as help develop and build new ones.

HP Competes With Apple

Hewlett-Packard has confirmed that their eStation printer will be available in stores early next year. This printer, at a price of $399, comes with a special feature--a removable tablet. This tablet, which is essentially free (with the purchase of the printer), will be competing with Apple's recent product the iPad.

This detachable tablet comes with many features including printer control (even when the tablet is not attached to the printer), the internet, music, weather application, Facebook, Yahoo!, Email, eBook (through Barnes and Noble), and more. One can even fax information without the usage of a phone. Also, when the tablet is attached to the printer, it acts as a digital frame. However, one con is that the tablet doesn't allow for one to get third party applications.

HP has even entered the green economy by making this product an ENERGY STAR qualified product. The product can save consumers money and energy through it's small usage of energy. It also allows automatic two-sided printing to save up paper.

The tablet market is booming and is predicted to grow immensely in coming years. Although Apple is a leader in this industry with their iPad, other companies, such as Dell, HP, and Samsung are also competing hard for this product. It will be very interesting to see who will become the leader in this market. Will Apple continue to take the lead or will HP's cheaper product (WITH a printer) take over?

"Blind and Deaf Friendly" Technology

On Tuesday, congress passed a bill that will attempt to bridge the gap between people with disabilities to new technology. Previous laws dealing with people with disabilities mandated improvements such as ramps to buildings, but with the continual advancements in technology, “today individuals with disabilities need online ramps to the Internet,” said Rep. Edward Markey of Massachusetts. This bill, The 21st Communications and Video Accessibility Act, “covers things like captions on Internet video, Internet phone services that work with hearing aids, television menus that can be seen by people with vision loss and even touch screens that the blind can use” (Valentino-DeVries).
Many companies have yet to comment on the new regulations, most likely because they are unaware of how they will meet these needs. However, Apple has begun their research to improving their products for the handicapped. Already, they have been developing a system in which users can move their finger on the screen and hear which icon they are touching, and then click appropriately. Also, after a while, users will begin to know where some of the apps are on the phone.
This Legislation will prove which companies are willing to present their products in the best way for a large and diverse customer base. There have been arguments already about this regulation because companies feel that since there is a low demand for “blind or deaf friendly” phones, it will cut into their companies profits. Surely the companies that emerge and do their best to help this issue will receive positive customer feedback, and will benefit from it.

Smartphones Newest Ability

Currently there are two Holiday Inn’s that are using smartphones, specifically the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, to replace keycards for their hotel rooms. The new system allows guests to make reservations online, then sends out a text message to the phone the day the guests reserved the room. In the text message is the guest’s room number and link to unlock the room door. With this method guests who are in a rush may simply check in and check out in a hurry. The two hotels will be testing the system from now through December.

Although the first concept of a “smartphone” was laid out by IBM, with the introduction of Simon in 1992; the first phone, labeled a “smartphone” was the GS88 by Ericsson in 1997. In ’97 the smart phone contained a calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, note pad and e-mail; items that are considered a standard in today’s market. However, the standard of smart phones shifted when the world was introduced to devices such as the iphone in ’07 or the android in ’08. Now, smartphones are expanding in so many ways, that its taking the roles of countless products.

Smartphones are becoming limitless in possibilities, in particular because of the phones ability to download and use applications. The more apps that are made, the more faces the smartphone can put on.

Asus Brings Life to Netbooks

Asus was the first company to mass produce netbooks. Their first netbook was the ASUS Eee PC. Netbooks, as everyone already knows, are a simpler version of laptops. They are ideal for surfing the web. Their storage space is smaller, along with the actual size of the netbook. They also tend to be much lighter than laptops and a lot cheaper too.

These products are great for educational purposes. They can easily be taken to class since they are so light. Netbooks also work great for children. They're cheaper, so if the child breaks it, there wouldn't be as much damage. Also, since it is smaller it is more fit for children. For this reason, Disney has invested in creating their own netbooks.

Through Asus' mass production of netbooks, other companies began to produce netbooks too. Acer is another company that caught the trend early and became a major producer of netbook too. Many people began to purchase netbooks when they first came out because as useful as laptops are, they are heavy to carry around. Netbooks were a good alternative to laptops. Also, although smartphones are widely bought now, netbooks are still favorable because smartphone keyboards and screens are too tiny.

Companies are adding more features to their netbooks such as mobile broadbands, more usb ports, etc. This will keep consumers buying netbooks.

HTC Corp. Emergence

HTC Corporation, formerly High Tech Computer Corporation, had very little influence on the consumer electronics industry until just a few years ago. HTC began their operations with the majority of their production on Windows Mobile Devices. Then in 2009, HTC Corporation switched the focus of their company to devices based on the Android operating systems. Until this major, influential change in production, HTC was merely white noise.

As a result of the HTC Android operating system, phones such as the HTC Droid Incredible have been able to put pressure on the Apple iPhone. Since Verizon does not offer the iPhone to its customers, the Droid incredible offers them a smart-phone with nearly all the same gadgets (touch screen, email, 3G internet, “Apps.”, etc.). By tapping into the cell phone market, HTC stock has sky rocketed in the past year. Also, phones operating on the Android system have been cutting into profits of other cell phone companies such as Samsung and Nokia. It is unusual for a company to appear in a new market so quickly, but HTC has clearly done it. Before the switch to the Android operating system, HTC Corporation was nowhere near the top of the smart-phone sales. However, a complete change in production has enabled them to emerge to the top of the Consumer Electronics Industry.

The Emergence of Blu-ray Discs

The em
ergence of Blu-ray DVD's in 2006 has led to a significant transformation in the entertainment aspect of consumer electronics. According to the article"Sony Unveils Blu-ray Disc & World's First Compatible PC" in Marketnews on May 18th, 2006 Sony was the first to release the Disc. However Blu-ray was actually formed by an association known as the Blu-ray Disc Association, or BDA. It was therefore a collection of companies who developed the disc rather than one specific one. The BDA explains that it was founded by nine successful consumer electronic companies: Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG (Lucky GoldStar) Electronics,Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.

When the first one was made available by Sony, it boasted 1080p high-definition media and 25GB of data per side of the disc, a drastic upgrade from the standard DVD. There was also limited players that supported Blu-ray for customers to use. Sony released a notebook capable of playing the discs along with them.

The introduction of Blu-rays five years ago led to a response by other companies to produce them as well, and a huge increase in the number of Blu-ray DVD players and HD TV's optimized for Blu-ray. Hence the discs spurred innovation in the consumer electronics industry, causing a chain reaction of companies looking to offer the clearest picture possible. Once the bar was raised, it was difficult for producers to provide anything less than that of the competition. People who walked into Best Buys or Circuit Citys saw the crystal clear pictures on the displays and wanted the superior, more enjoyable form of watching movies and TV.

Today, Blu-ray Discs are becoming even more popular and high-definition has become a new standard and necessity for consumers. Innovation in the consumer electronics industry has no looks of slowing down as 3D TV's are making their presence known as well as even higher definition combinations between cable boxes and DVD players and TVs and HDMI cables.

Wireless Printing for iProducts

Apple announced today their plan for AirPrint, a program that will be used for wireless printing for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices. This new program will be able to “automatically find printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software”.

As if today, a beta version of the AirPrint program was released to members of Apple’s iOS developer program. Apple intends on having the AirPrint available for retail this upcoming fall and the holiday shopping season.

This product exemplifies Apple’s efforts to offer efficient and quality products to its customers. The company focuses on the ease of its products and values its customer’s time.

I believe AirPrint is another great Apple product! Having a wireless printer is a huge convenience and having the capability to print from devices such as the iPad, iPhone and iPod adds to the magnitude of this product. It is surprising that a printer of this kind has not been introduced to the market already. The fact that AirPrint is both Mac and PC compatible and “supports a wide range of printers from entry level inkjets to office laser printers” will make this product highly successful. The future of Apple looks even brighter with the addition of AirPrint.

What Does the Future Hold for GOME?

Founder of GOME, a very large electrical appliance company in Hong Kong and China, was put into jail on Monday. Huang Guangyu has found guilty of bribery and insider trading. He was caught trading inside information with shares of Shenzhen-listed Beijing Centergate Technologies Co. He also was caught buying 106 million dollars of Hong Kong money. Other people, including his wife and business partner, were also found guilty. This will largely affect the company itself.

Although the founder has caused harm to the company and society, the company itself has provided a lot of social services. In the year 2010, GOME donated 250 tons of rice to Yunnan Province and they also donated RMB 6 million to victims who suffered the YuShu earthquake. Other social services GOME provided include job training school for the disabled, fund raisers, providing travel expenses to underprivileged university students, and more.

Like many other consumer electronic companies, GOME is dedicated to providing the best service to their customers. Their mission statement begins with a mission to "best serve our [their] customers". They want their customers to be able to shop comfortably by providing them with competitive prices, convenient locations, good customer service, and more. A company in the United States similar to GOME, Best Buy, has a much shorter and simpler mission statement. They want to provide the unmet needs of the customers through their employees. Although slightly different on their approach, both companies ultimately put their customers needs first.

Massive Toshiba laptop recall

Last week Toshiba posted a recall of 41,000 Satellite T130 laptops on its production support forum last week. This recall, ordered by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, was issued because of "overheating and deforming the plastic casing area around the AC adaptor plug." Although this problem only resulted in 2 reports of "minor burn injuries," the CPSC found it dangerous enough to recall this item. Back in 2007, Toshiba found itself in a similar fired hazard issue, that time with batteries. Like this problem, the acted ethically and recalled the defective items.

Toshiba has committed a large number of resources to disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti. Relief efforts like this, along with the stateside ExploraVision programs and benefits for non-profit groups shows that Toshiba is not solely worried about their bottom line, instead they keep their corporate social responsibility in mind.

Many companies in the consumer electronic industry have strong, ethical morals when dealing with their customers. Toshiba has “redefined the word ‘profit’ to embrace the long-term livelihood of people, and the health of our planet too. Also, the four major values on which the company lives by are philosophy & commitment, community, sustainability, and reuse & recycle. All of these ideas show that this company shows that the customers, and the planet, are top priority. Other competitors such as Dell also say that they want to deliver “the best customer experience in the markets we serve.” This mission statement directly states their commitment to the satisfaction of the customer.

Apple Knew of iPhone Issue

In an article from the Wall Street Journal on July 16th, 2010 it was revealed that Apple had prior knowledge to the problems that the iPhone 4 has with antenna reception. The dilemma was that, as many people know, the metal band around the outside of the iPhone doubled as the antenna. This seemed like an ingenious idea until customers realized that whenever your hand covered the lower left corner while talking on the phone, the reception was gone and the call was lost. Public discontent stemmed from not only the trouble with the antenna, but with the fact that Apple so rarely falters from flawless designs and cutting edge success.

The original PR move by Apple was for Steve Jobs to insist merely on holding the phone a different way or buying a case for it. This did not satisfy consumers who feel they should be free to hold the phone however they want and still have it work. Eventually it leaked that Apple knew about the design problem from the beginning and still went through with releasing the iPhone 4 anyway. This increased public outrage because any possibility for ignorance on Apple's part and it being an unknown and accidental problem disappeared.

This is an ethical issue because Apple violated its fiduciary responsibility to its consumers who trust that the product they are buying is backed by Apples reputation of quality products. The company itself responded poorly, refusing to recall the iPhone and waiting until the next generation iPhone to fix the problem. Consumers responded by expressing their discontent and anger at the usually upfront and trustworthy company.

One company in consumer electronics that shows corporate social responsibility is LG Electronics. They have been known to renovate universities including the University of Lagos in Nigeria. LG has built facilities in order to uplift communities around the world and continues to set the bar for corporate social responsibility.

The main part of Apple's mission statement is that it "continues to lead the industry in innovation." This shows that Apple is mainly dedicated to producing newer, better products and outdoing itself and other consumer electronic companies. Hewlett Packard has a slightly different mission statement and values. It stresses customer loyalty, commitment to employees, and results through teamwork. It appears that HP is slightly more concerned with customer satisfaction than Apple or at least according to the mission statement. All consumer electronics companies are interested in pursuing the latest, fastest, easiest technology but some take customers to heart more than others.

Coming Soon To A Car Near You!

OnStar is expected to match their rival, the Ford's Sync music and information service, with new upgrades which includes updating Facebook status', and even apps such as Trapstar, which helps detect police in your area. General Motors, the producers of OnStar, say that the will be "free services hooking into Facebook with a OnStar subscription; the current subscription provides accident alerts, directions, vehicle diagnostics, and roadside assistance. This new upgrade, will use a voice-to-text feature to not only, update their Facebook status' but also listen to their most recent "newsfeeds".
This innovative upgrade is only the first step towards a grand realm of possibilities. Some speculate that OnStar may start to offer entertainment and information services directly to user's smartphones. OnStar currently have applications that monitor gas and control the vehicle's locks and horns. At the moment there are more than thirty vehicles with the OnStar option.
Living in an age of technology, i believe innovation takes on a different face. It is not about creating something new, but about connecting what is already there. And OnStar is doing exactly that. OnStar has now comfortably brought your social life, into your car.

Apple takes a big shot at Motorola

Apple is expected to released a new iPhone for Verizon is early 2011. Currently the iPhone is only available for at&t, which has been a major dissapointment for customers from all other cell phone carriers. The Motorola Android-based handset line has been a big hit with Verizon, however, with the introduction of the iPhone to the Verizon company, sales for the Android will surely plummet. Due to this almost certain decrease in sales, Motorola is planning to then ship a large number of the Android product overseas, including China, where interested has seemed to be growing.
I believe that the introduction of the iPhone to Verizon will surely take off, and surpass any sort of estimation of sales. Not only will Apple benefit by selling more units, Verizon will surely excell when the implement the iPhone into there services. Many customers from other major cell phone services (T-Mobile and Sprint) will surely look to change plans to get there hands on the new iPhone. This deal between Verizon and Apple is a win-win situation in which both companies will flourish.

Advancing From Touch Screen Phones to Touch-Free

eyeSight Mobile Technologies has come up with a new technology which allows consumers to control their cell phones without touching the screen. Currently this technology is only available on a Nokia 5800. With this new application, people are able to make hand gestures in front of their phone camera, causing the music to play/stop, skip, etc.
This new development, called Hand Gesture, is going to make eyeSight Mobile Technologies a very important player in this part of the industry. They are currently working out a license with mobile companies in order to have this application available to the new smartphones.
Applications like this will surely change future electronics. It's currently only available for phones, but soon after it will most likely be available for MP3s, laptops, TVs, etc. This will most likely make devices such as remotes, mouse, and more useless, helping companies to spend less money on these products and more on the actual electronic itself.

Google To Launch New TV Platform Globally In 2011

Google has announced that it will be releasing a new Google TV platform next year. It will have a search bar at the top of the television screen to search the internet while watching TV. The platform plans were unveiled in Berlin and hinted at voice recognition software to change channels. This will be a drastic change in the way televisions and consumer electronics operate.
I believe that Google's new TV will spark a new generation of electronics that incorporate a hybrid of the internet and televisions. People can now use the internet and search TV listings via the internet instead of standard guides on the television, as well as anything else they wish to find. Google is taking a big step along with Apple to produce TV systems as companies that do not specialize in televisions at all. This could lead to success by introducing fresh ideas, but it could also flop due to their lack of experience and expertise. It will depend on customer satisfaction to know whether or not Google has a chance at getting its foot in the door of tangible electronics other than its renowned search engine.

Google Speeds Up!

To keep up with changing times and increasing competition, Google has adapted their search process as well as viewed results. Just recently Google added a new feature to speed searches. This most recent change was to address an issues expressed by users, as well as an effort to remain one of the top players in the industry. The new feature has appeared on searches in the US as well as six European countries this week, and will grow world-wide in the coming months. With the new search feature, the search box attempts to complete the word or phrase as it is being typed. As letters are entered into the search box, possible matches appear. An estimation of how much time this feature will cutdown from search times two to five seconds from the average search time of 25 seconds, adding up to 350 million hours a year.
It is thought that greater speed in the search process will affect ads displayed on Google. One claim suggests that with the new search feature, particular ads would have a tendency to appear more than another. Since ad costs are based off of clicks on an advertisement, the new search method could alter the results and therefore decrease the chance for a particular ad to be displayed. According to Google, ads will not be affected by the greater speed of searches. This addresses the argument that Google "plays favorites with its results", and in fact they do not.
Much attention is given to the fact that Google is trying to prevail over another rising search engine, Bing. It is believed that some of the Google enhancements are a result of competition, and desire to be the go-to search engine. As competition arises, products are often improved which offers the public access to better goods and services as exemplified by Google.

The F.F.C. & Their Attempts To Regulate the Internet

Reacting to the world’s “relatively” new craze, the Internet, the Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.) seeks more regulation over the wireless, Internet world. The F.C.C. has been trying to ensure that the Internet becomes an all-access practice also termed net neutrality.

Large, and dominant companies who utilize the wireless Internet, such as Google and Verizon, have been urging the F.C.C. to obtain control over wireless regulation as well as ensure the open-access practice, net neutrality. These large companies, who utilize the Internet as part of their products, are dominant in the Consumer Electronics market. In essence, any company who uses the Internet will become significantly affected by the F.C.C.’s new regulations.

However, before the F.C.C. can fully devote their attention to the wireless world, they need new legislation from Congress stating the full extent of the Commission’s authority. The F.C.C. has already tried to gain authority over the matter before it was struck down before court this past April. Nevertheless, if the F.C.C. does obtain the ability to regulate the Internet, companies will need to mold to make the most of the new realm, net neutrality.

The Latest American Shopping List

Rather than the typical household shopping list, American have changed the list of products they are shopping for. Electronic toys such as TVs, computers, as well as video and phone equipment have become some of the most sought after products. This poses a threat to the retail and consumer product industries, as sales are shifting away from these once popular industries.
The arising spending pattern of American consumers indicates their desire for the latest technology. Not only do consumers want the best product at the time, they are also willing to purchase new products once they are released. This benefits Americans as they are able to use technology to the fullest, promoting efficiency. In addition, this promotes competition among producers which results to improved devices and products, so that the company can offer the best in the market.
In an effort to survive these tough times, retailers have initiated various ways in which they will not make it to the bottom of the American shopping list. Incentives and promotions such as offering technological devices to shoppers is one way those left behind are addressing the problem. Together, retail and electronics offer a hope, so that the economy has the opportunity to turn around. This is key as the industry is then able to grow and expand even more than it already has. Through these innovative methods, companies attempt to build consumer confidence. Ensuring consumer confidence is essential as it offers an even brighter future to the electronic industry.

Burning DVDs Has Become Much Easier Than Before Thanks to EZ Writer II

Apricorn created a new device that allows consumers to burn DVDs and CDs at a much quicker rate than before. This device is less than one pound and it only needs one USB cable to operate. The EZ Writer allows consumers to record more than eight GB of data per DVD. This enables people to record high quality videos and more, which is perfect for our current generation where high quality videos can easily be recorded through small digital cameras.

The EZ Writer II is important to the consumer electronic industry because it is more appealing to consumers. This will increase the gross income of Apricorn. As other companies notice Apricorn's increase in income, there will be more competition within the industry, which will in turn create more hi-tech devices.

Navigation System with "Human" Guidance

NAVTEQ launched a new product, the NAVTEQ Natural Guidance, that will change the way navigation systems and their users interact. Users often complain about the difficulty they experience when trying to understand where navigation systems are attempting to tell them when to turn. This new product gives the user directions the way humans provide it each other, with reference cues such as buildings or landmarks. In addition, the NAVTEQ Natural Guidance changes with each season, such as trees and buches in the spring, to give the user even more precise directions.
This new, practical way of navigation will surely propel NAVTEQ to the top of the navigation industry. User friendly products such as this one will enable NAVTEQ to surpass other competitors such as GARMIN or TOM TOM. The NAVTEQ Natural Guidance is definitely the start of a new trend in the world of navigation.

HP Reveals 3D Laptop

HP has released a new 3D laptop named the Envy 17. It has a 1080p high definition display and comes with a pair of 3D glasses. It also has an advanced sound system developed by HP and Beats by Dr. Dre. The laptop will be introduced near the holidays and pricing has not yet been announced. The article by Antone Gonsalves of InformationWeek describes the specs associated with the cutting edge laptop computer.

The 3D is meant for entertainment and boasts a Blu-ray DVD player designed for the optimal movie-watching experience. The laptop can also run in 2D for all of the situations in which 3D is not appropriate or necessary. This new technology is a huge advance and could be the starting point of a wave of new 3D devices. There are already 3D TVs available and now it is possible to have 3D while on your laptop.

The Envy 17 will impact the world of consumer electronics by raising the bar. I think that this laptop will start a trend of more 3D technology and continue the objective of having the most cutting edge profitable electronics money can buy.
